"Catalonia is a European country".

In other words, "Catalonia is a European country".

The vice president and interim president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, addressed these words in English to the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to demand Catalan independence and a referendum of self-determination.

"We must give a voice to the citizens of Catalonia so that they exercise their political will" and decide on the independence of Spain, Aragonès (ERC) continued, during his speech at the Conference of Presidents on European funds, exceptionally chaired by the community president.

But the sovereign appeal of the Republican leader has not stopped there.

Aragonès has demanded "direct dialogue with the European Commission", according to sources present at the meeting, which takes place electronically due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Our president [Quim Torra] has been unjustly disqualified", denounced the top leader of the Catalan Government, after the Supreme Court ruling that confirmed the crime of disobedience of the already former president Torra, who ignored the demands of the Board Central Electoral, the body that guarantees compliance with the Electoral Law during electoral periods.

Sources from the Generalitat confirm to this newspaper that Aragonès "has made a claim that he is in a forum in which Torra should be and is not about to have hung a banner in favor of freedom of expression and political prisoners ".

Asked about Aragonès' appeal that Catalonia is a European country, the Government reaffirms: "Catalonia is a country in Europe."

Aragonès has abandoned English to talk about the management of European funds.

One must work, he said, "from co-responsibility."

For this reason, "Catalonia wants to be a protagonist" and wants to negotiate directly with Von der Leyen, he added.

Lastly, the interim president has called for greater attention to SMEs.

"The challenge is extraordinary," he warned, before asking that all funds destined for Spain be used.

And on the second wave it has agreed that "an economic and social rescue plan is needed."
