The motive behind the terrorist attack must have been that Paty in his teaching on freedom of expression showed the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed to his students.

The history teacher was brutally murdered, on his way home from school, by an 18-year-old Islamist.

The killer was shot dead shortly afterwards by police.

Following the assassination, French President Emmanuel Macron has in recent weeks cracked down on what he calls "Islamist separatism".

"Islam today is a religion in crisis around the world," Macron said in early October in connection with the presentation of bills to protect France's secular tradition.

- Islamists want our future.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has previously warned that Macron's statements could lead to increased xenophobia.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed with the criticism this weekend.

- What can be said about a head of state who treats millions of people from other faith groups like this?

First and foremost, take a psychic test, Erdogan said in a televised speech on Saturday.

French goods are also being boycotted in several parts of the Arab world following the French president's remarks against radical Islamism.
