According to data released by Johns Hopkins University, the latest catastrophic toll of confirmed coronavirus infections in the world is over 42 million.

In the lead are the

United States with 8.5 million infected people

, followed by India (7.8 million), Brazil (5.3 million), Russia, France, Argentina and Spain, all just over one million.

The US also holds the tragic record of the number of deaths, over 224 thousand, followed by Brazil (156 thousand), India (117 thousand) and Mexico (88 thousand).

Although progress is being made at unprecedented speed on the vaccine side, scientists predict that spring will not allow for a return to pre-pandemic normalcy.

Hence, it may take up to a year.

Meanwhile, i

infections are increasing exponentially also in Europe

.

The

Slovenia

is among the countries that have imposed severe restrictions, both internally (such as curfews) and entry into the country.

Italy is directly involved: 14 regions, including the neighboring Friuli-Venezia Giulia, ended up in the red list, while the others remain in the orange.

Those who arrive from the first will have to respect a 10-day quarantine at the entrance, or prove to be negative with a swab.

In

France

, which exceeded 42,000 infections in one day, President Emmanuel Macron predicted on Friday that the virus "will be present until next summer, at best".

The night curfew has been extended to the whole national territory.

In

Belgium

, the minister-president of the Brussels region, Rudi Vervoort, announced a curfew at 22-6 and other rules, including bans on sports and cultural centers.

"We have galloping numbers in terms of contagion, the big challenge is the collapse of the hospital system", commented Vervoort, in an echo of the concerns already addressed in March.

The

Spain

, which this week became the first European country to exceed one million infections, goes to a new declaration of alertness.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, while two weeks of strict restrictions close, has sought consultation with the regional governors, before new measures such as a new state of emergency and a curfew.

The

Germany

, meanwhile, has exceeded the threshold of 10 thousand deaths, recording more than 14,700 cases in a day, and Chancellor Angela Merkel has been back on calling upon citizens to "reduce the contacts, face fewer people as possible".

In

Poland

, which has recorded the record of deaths (179) and where new restrictions have entered into force, President Andrzej Duda has joined the list of infected leaders.

Coronavirus cases in the

Czech Republic

hit a record high, rising to over 15,000 in one day for the first time.

The upsurge has continued in the past two months despite strict restrictions, with movement restrictions, the closure of shops, schools and restaurants, and a ban on sports competitions and rallies of more than two people.

Masks are mandatory outdoors and in the car.

The number of Covid-19 patients in hospital exceeded 5,000 for the first time, putting pressure on the health system.

The Czech Republic has had over 238,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, including over 78,000 in the past seven days, and has reported 1,971 deaths related to the virus.
