The Executive Director of the Central Inspection Laboratory of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, Eng.Abdullah Hassan Al-Maeeni, said that 15 laboratories participated in the qualitative aptitude testing program to verify the competence of medical laboratories in the tests for the emerging corona virus (Covid-19), as they were able to give correct results for the samples subject to testing. By 100%.

He said that the Council, in cooperation with the laboratory of "Biogenics", one of the companies of the "G42 Healthcare Group", conducted a qualitative aptitude test program at the international level, and the first in the region, with the aim of verifying the efficiency of medical laboratories in examining the virus, as 15 medical laboratories in the program participated in the program. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi to obtain national accreditation.

He explained that the council cooperated in this program with the "G42" laboratory, which prepared the reference samples for this program. Three samples were distributed to each laboratory participating in the aptitude test, one of which was highly positive, the other weakly positive, and the third negative.

The included laboratories conducted a separate analysis of the samples, using their different techniques and protocols, and presented their results to the Board.

Al-Maeeni indicated that the samples were subjected to a preliminary test using five different methods, including the “Lambur” test, which is based on the isothermal amplification technique, and the rapid DNA sequencing technique. This technique has the ability to analyze thousands of samples daily using one device. With speed, accuracy, low cost, and its ability to detect SARS-COV-2 virus.

He pointed out that the merit-testing programs are one of the best means available to verify the efficiency of laboratories and their ability to give correct and reliable results, and these programs give the participating entities the opportunity to obtain accreditation according to the requirements of the national accreditation system, which enhances transparency and confidence in the level of efficiency and quality of services available in the country. And increases the standard of confidence of community members and institutions in the services provided to all residents and visitors to the state.

For her part, the Director of the UAE National Accreditation System (ENAS), Dr. Rehab Al-Amiri, confirmed that participation in the merit-testing programs is a basic requirement for all conformity assessment bodies, including medical laboratories, to obtain accreditation in accordance with international requirements and practices, as the UAE National Accreditation System issued a document "Technical requirements for participation in the merit-testing programs" since 2009, which are reviewed periodically, in line with internationally applicable practices, in accordance with the needs and directions of the national strategic goals related to raising the quality and efficiency of the quality infrastructure in the country.

She added: “It is mandatory to participate in merit-testing programs in various conformity assessment activities within the accreditation field, and to repeat these necessary contributions to ensure the continuity and validity of accreditation, and accordingly, the results of the participation of technically accredited bodies are evaluated by residents and technical experts of the UAE national accreditation system.”

Al-Amiri pointed out that the merit-testing program for the emerging corona virus checks, which was implemented by the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, is considered one of the most important programs during the pandemic period, as it is one of the evidence necessary to prove the competence of medical laboratories operating in the country, which provide data and information to support decision-makers from the legislative authorities. And supervisory and concerned with crisis and emergency management, and the implementation and updating of its plans to control the spread of the disease through reliable results.

This fast DNA sequencing technology is able to analyze thousands of samples daily.
