Dead seal pups abandoned by their mothers have also been observed at the site before, but not at all on the same scale.
The reason then has been that the mothers did not have enough food for their puppies.
According to Ocean Conservation Namibia, food shortages are the most likely cause even now, as fish stocks have moved away from the area.
