October 23, 2020A letter, which is an appeal, sent to President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte signed by over one hundred scientists and university professors.



The request has a tone marked by urgency, namely "to take stringent and drastic measures in the next two or three days" to "prevent the numbers of the contagion in Italy from inevitably arriving, in the absence of effective corrective measures, in the next three weeks , to produce several hundred deaths a day ". 



Among them are the names of the Rector of the Normale di Pisa, Luigi Ambrosio and Fernando Ferroni, former president of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics.



"As scientists, researchers, university professors - reads the letter - we believe it is right and urgent to express our deepest concern regarding the current phase of spread of the pandemic from Covid-19 and we believe it is useful to report to the attention of the Institutions, the President of Repubblica Sergio Mattarella and of the Government, in the person of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, the estimates reported in the article by the President of the Accademia dei Lincei, Professor Giorgio Parisi.



"The necessary reconciliation of the needs of the economy and the protection of jobs with those of the containment of the spread of the infection must now leave room for the pressing need to safeguard the right to individual and collective health enshrined in art.

32 of the Constitutional Charter as inviolable ", warn the signatories of the appeal, including Gianfranco Viesti, economist of the University of Bari, Carlo Doglioni geologist and president of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Alfio Quarteroni, applied mathematician, Enzo Marinari, full professor of Physics at Sapienza, Roberta Calvano, full professor of Constitutional Law Unitelma Sapienza, Piero Marcati, Vice-Rector of Gran Sasso Institute, Alessandra Celletti astronomer vice-president Anvur.



"The safeguarding of jobs, entrepreneurial and industrial activities, commercial establishments, and other activities they would also inevitably be affected by the outcome of an out-of-control spread of the pandemic that lasted for many months - reads the text sent to Colle and Palazzo Chigi -.

Taking effective measures now serves precisely to save the economy and jobs.

The longer you wait, the more the measures that will be taken will have to be harder, last longer, thus producing a greater economic impact ".  



" This is why the contagion must be stopped now, with adequate measures, and that is why we ask to intervene now in an adequate way, in compliance with constitutional guarantees, but in full protection of the health of citizens, which goes hand in hand and is also necessary and functional to economic well-being ", conclude the scientists who have embraced the alarm launched in the past few hours by the president of the Lincei, Parisi.
