Turnout in 2016 ended up at 55.7 percent, a figure that places the United States at the bottom compared to most other democracies and far from Sweden's top position of 87.2 percent from the 2018 parliamentary election.

According to Henrik Ekengren Oscarsson, one of the reasons is the American election day.

- It has been placed on a Tuesday when people are not free and that dampens the will to go and vote.
