In the capital Madrid, concerns are growing about the financial consequences, including with the restaurant owner Rebeca Toribio.

- The restaurant used to always be full, but since the state of emergency was introduced, our revenue has decreased by 50%, she says.

The second wave has meant a record number of new infections in Spain.

Despite this, the situation is not as serious as last spring, but those responsible in Madrid are afraid that further shutdowns could have even worse long-term consequences.

- We must also ensure that those who have not covid for the economic crisis affect health, says Juan González Armengol, Deputy Minister of Health in Madrid.
