History of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh -

20 Minutes

Efforts are continuing to achieve a ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh.

On Thursday, Emmanuel Macron received Armenian President Armen Sarkissian at the Elysee Palace, after speaking on the phone with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pachinian and with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev.

The day before, Armenia ruled out any “diplomatic solution” with Azerbaijan in this conflict, against the backdrop of hitherto unsuccessful efforts by the international community to negotiate a lasting truce.

A quickly forgotten ceasefire promise

The head of state had already participated in a mediation on October 17, alongside Russia and the United States, which resulted in a promise of a ceasefire between Armenia and Azerbaijan which was quickly violated.

The Russian president said on Thursday that the death toll since fighting resumed at the end of September between Azerbaijan and Armenian separatists in Nagorno Karabakh "is approaching 5,000".

The Minsk group, which brings together Russia, France and the United States, is trying to work for "substantial negotiations" but which require "a peaceful climate", recognized the Elysee.

France has decided to send medical aid to the injured, details of which will be specified in the coming days, adds the French presidency.
