His interview was published by the press service of the leader of Azerbaijan.

Aliyev was asked whether Azerbaijan would "respect the right to self-determination" of the inhabitants of Karabakh if control over the territory was returned.

“As for self-determination, the Armenians have already determined their destiny.

They have an independent Armenian state, ”Aliyev said.

He stressed that the issue of self-determination should not violate the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

“There are different types of self-determination, there are different types of communities.

For example, there may be cultural autonomy.

We see this in the developed countries of Europe, when people have certain rights in their municipalities and communities.

As well as everywhere in Azerbaijan, Armenians living in our country can also have such contacts, ”the Azerbaijani president noted.

At the same time, he ruled out the possibility of holding a referendum in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“There will be no referendum in Nagorno-Karabakh.

We will never agree with this ... We will never allow the creation of a second Armenian state on the territory of Azerbaijan, ”concluded Aliyev.

At the same time, he assured that the Armenians living in Karabakh remain citizens of Azerbaijan and their rights and security will be ensured.

Earlier, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian assessed the likelihood of Yerevan recognizing the independence of Karabakh.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the "red line" for Armenia is the right to self-determination of Karabakh.

Aliyev, in turn, called the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan "a red line" for Baku.

He noted that "under no circumstances will Azerbaijan give consent to the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh."
