Emmanuel Macron will pay national tribute to Samuel Paty at the Sorbonne on Wednesday evening, three days after his assassination near his college in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine.

The ceremony, in the presence of 400 guests, including around 100 students from establishments in Ile-de-France, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the courtyard of the Sorbonne, a symbolic place of the spirit of the Enlightenment and education.

"We would like the President of the Republic to express for the whole of the educational community the nation's support for his school and its teachers. It is important," said Frédéric Marchand, secretary general of Unsa Education.

A minute of silence

After the arrival of the coffin, a song will be interpreted by the orchestra of the Republican Guard and the control of Radio France and two texts will be read by students and teachers.

The Head of State will then deliver a brief speech, followed by a minute's silence in tribute to the history-geography professor.

Teachers expect the president to recall the centrality of schools in the Republic.

Which means learning lessons, explains Frédérique Rolet, SNES secretary.

"This means helping teachers to do their job, providing them with protection and support when they encounter difficulties, as was the case with Samuel Paty."

On Wednesday evening, teachers will gather all over France to join in the tribute.
