The prosecutor also confirmed that the 18-year-old man, who was shot dead by police after the attack, had contact with the parent who hung out Samuel Paty on social media after he showed his students caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, reports Reuters.

The French government has demanded that the local militant group Cheikh Yassine be dissolved and banned.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said in an interview with the BFM TV network that Cheikh Yassine helped spread the word calling for mobilization against the teacher.

For a similar reason, a mosque in northeastern Paris will also be closed for six months.

- More groups that have spread hatred against the republic will dissolve in the coming weeks, says Gabriel Attal, spokesman for the government.

Seven people arrested

An investigation into terrorism has been set up and seven people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in Friday's attack, including two minors.

Nine people previously picked up for questioning have been released.

On Tuesday night, thousands of people gathered in Paris to honor the memory of Samuel Paty.

Another memorial service will be held on Wednesday afternoon outside the Sorbonne University building in Paris.
