Planning for the island began as early as the beginning of the 2000s, and in 2008 an in-depth overview plan was submitted.

Since then, several investigations have been made of, among other things, bridges, breeding birds and traffic issues.

Residents in the area have also been critical and a red-listed white-backed woodpecker that nested there delayed plans.

Is the woodpecker gone now?

- I do not really know, but we have seen that the island is too small for a territory for this species.

We have therefore proposed measures with areas upstream of the Ume River where it would be possible to create conditions for a nesting area, says Mikael Berglund (S), chairman of the building committee.

"In 10 years things will have happened"

It is planned for up to 3,000 homes in the area and the cost of the total investment will land at around SEK 10 billion according to Mikael Berglund.

In Umeå municipality's proposal for a new school structure, the building plans on the island have been taken into account.

- School planning looks 10 years ahead and until then things will have happened, says Berglund.

In the clip above, you can hear what the chairman of the building committee says to those who are critical of the construction.
