Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Iran does not intend to enter an arms race in the region or start a wave of arms purchases despite the end of the international embargo.
He stressed during his participation via video technology in a session of the UN Security Council on the situation in the Gulf that the choice of security, peace and stability is clear to everyone.
For her part, the US representative to the UN Security Council Kelly Craft said that her country does not agree with the Russian proposal to establish a security structure for the Gulf.
And it considered that the solution to enhance stability in the region is much easier, as the Security Council must have the courage to ensure that Iran fulfills its international obligations.
The Iranian nuclear agreement with the six world powers in 2015 and Resolution 2231 issued by the UN Security Council provide for the lifting of the embargo on Iran regarding conventional weapons, which the Security Council imposed on it in March 2007, on October 18, 2020.
According to the agreement, Iran will be able to buy and sell conventional weapons after 5 years of the agreement, that is, on October 18, 2020, and the ban on Iranian missiles and its programs will be lifted after 8 years of the agreement, that is, in 2023.
On Sunday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned states and individuals against any sale or purchase of conventional weapons with Iran, while Tehran said today that the UN embargo imposed on it was lifted automatically under the Iranian nuclear agreement, after 10 years of its entry into force.
For his part, Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami told Al Jazeera that his country is ready to sign military and security treaties with the Gulf states regarding stability in the region, warning that any Israeli threat emanating from the Gulf region will face a clear and direct response.
