Since the WHO office in China reported the onset of the disease at the end of December, the pandemic linked to the new coronavirus has killed at least 1,114,499 people, according to a report established by AFP from sources official Monday October 19.

In addition, more than 40 million cases of infection have been officially diagnosed since the start of the epidemic.

The United States is the most affected country in terms of both deaths and cases, with 219,676 deaths, followed by Brazil with 153,905 deaths, India with 114,610 deaths, Mexico with 86,167 deaths and the Kingdom United with 43,646 dead.

Containment in Wales

Wales decreed Monday, October 19 a two-week lockdown from Friday in an attempt to break the second wave of Covid-19, taking the strictest measures in a United Kingdom which addresses the issue in dispersed order.

Confined in a block on March 23 during the first wave, the country most bereaved in Europe by the pandemic is reacting to the resurgence in a localized way, after measures concerning England announced at the end of September.

Curfews and closed bars in Belgium

Cafés and restaurants keep doors closed Monday in Belgium, a restriction of at least one month deemed "catastrophic" by the profession but which the government justifies by the surge in contaminations.

The measure is doubled by a curfew between midnight and 5 a.m. from Monday evening in one of the European countries most bereaved by the pandemic in relation to its population.

New restrictions in Switzerland

Since Monday, spontaneous gatherings of more than 15 people in public spaces have been banned in Switzerland, the wearing of masks is compulsory in closed spaces accessible to the public and private events of more than 15 people are regulated.

The canton of Bern is also the first in the country to once again ban demonstrations of more than 1,000 people, a decision which is expected to impact professional football and hockey.

European recovery plan

"It is crucial" for the recovery of the euro zone, where the new restrictive measures "weigh on the recovery", that the European stimulus plan "is a success" and the money paid out as soon as possible, warned Monday in an interview with the President of the ECB, Christine Lagarde.

The negotiations on this exceptional plan of 750 billion euros, adopted in July by the Twenty-Seven to help Member States cope with the economic consequences of the health crisis, have stumbled in particular over the refusal of Poland and Hungary to make European subsidies conditional on respect for the rule of law.
