Bernard Cazeneuve on Monday castigated certain “leftist” political groups, which “weaken the Republic” by their “ambiguous speeches”.

The former minister was reacting to the attack on Friday against a teacher who had shown caricatures of Muhammad.

"I speak of course of a certain number of rebellious deputies who do not behave in a republican way (and) are largely responsible for what exists in this country", judged the former Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of François Hollande on France Inter, questioned about the “loneliness” of teachers.

Mélenchon's "very great responsibility"

"The Republic is sagging because, on its principles, some have a trembling hand", assured Bernard Cazeneuve, thinking of elected officials "who make arrangements with the Salafists in the neighborhoods".

"We are creating the conditions for extreme tension, for a strategy of confrontation within the Republic", he added.

The rally in tribute to the assassinated professor, Samuel Paty, Sunday Place de la République in Paris, was an opportunity for some political figures to castigate the positions of La France Insoumise, the former Prime Minister Manuels Valls criticizing Jean-Luc Mélenchon as having "a very great responsibility in this cowardice of the left" in the face of Islamism.

Affected by these remarks, LFI deputies defend themselves

Jean-Luc Mélenchon reacted to these comments on BFMTV, judging that “all these people are shirking their own responsibilities”, and arguing that “this is not the time for the dispute”.

“Once and for all: Jean-Luc Mélenchon is neither Islamist nor leftist!

The LFI deputy Eric Coquerel estimated on Sud Radio that Manuel Valls "does exactly what the terrorists expect: to divide, to make attacks of this type basely politicians to have access to some media".

He judged "particularly insulting" the remarks of the Minister of the Interior Gerald Darmanin who, on several occasions, accused LFI of "Islamo-leftism".

“It reminds me of Judeo-Bolshevik in the 1930s,” said Eric Coquerel.

What to do in the face of Islamism?

For Bernard Cazeneuve, on France Inter, "it is necessary every day to expel those who, foreigners, by their words, by their acts, by their behavior, incited to hatred, violated the rules of the Republic", he said. he felt, however, stressing the legal and diplomatic difficulties in doing so.

He is also in favor of "the dissolution of all associations whose words fracture the Republic in its foundations".
