French President Emmanuel Macron received Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi and his accompanying delegation at the Elysee Presidential Palace in Paris, on Monday.

Macron's office said in a statement that issues of Middle East security, counterterrorism and reconstruction in Iraq would be discussed.

Al-Kazemi had met earlier today with his French counterpart Jean Castex, where they discussed ways to develop and strengthen bilateral relations in the economic, investment, security and health fields.

He stressed that his country seeks solid relations with the countries of the world based on common interests, and that Iraq will restore its international standing.

Signing memoranda

During the meeting, the two parties signed 3 memoranda of "declaration of intent" in the fields of transportation, agriculture and education.

Al-Kazemi arrived in Paris on Sunday evening, at the start of his European tour, which also includes Britain and Germany.

Al-Kazemi's European tour is the first for the Iraqi prime minister in the old continent since he took office in May.

Early last month, Macron visited Baghdad, where the most prominent thing that was discussed with Al-Kazemi at the time was cooperation in the energy field and working together on a nuclear project that can overcome the electricity shortage in Iraq.

They also discussed military cooperation against ISIS, French support for a metro project in Baghdad, and the implementation of projects in the fields of science, culture, health, and humanitarian support.

Macron stressed at the time that France supports Al-Kazemi's efforts to strengthen Iraqi sovereignty, as well as to keep weapons in the hands of the state.
