The government has now appointed an inquiry to find out how an abolition of the municipalities' right to say no to wind turbines would work.

- The municipal veto has been an uncertainty factor that could occur at any time in the process.

This creates uncertainty that disadvantages the development of wind power in Sweden, and we think it is unfortunate, he tells SVT Nyheter.

says Per Bolund.

According to Bolund, more than 400 different wind power has been stopped around the country due to the municipality vetoing, which creates a great deal of uncertainty among those who want to invest in the energy source.

- If we are to achieve a 100 percent renewable electricity production system, then we must remove such obstacles, says Per Bolund.

The municipalities' influence will be reviewed

According to the Minister of Financial Markets, the change would not affect the municipalities' self-determination and planning monopoly.

The inquiry will see if it is possible to increase the municipal influence in a different way than through the veto form.

- The municipalities will have the opportunity to have a dialogue with the person who will build and be able to propose a different location or design.

Strong criticism

But the question is disputed.

Critical voices have been raised among the Moderates in Gävle municipality.

Municipal councilor William Elofsson (M) states that the government's proposal plays into the hands of the wind power lobby and does not take into account the effects on the local environment and the local business community that the proposal would entail.

- It is not surprising that a multi-billion industry without local roots is no stranger to reducing local influence, says municipal councilor William Elofsson according to a press release.

The issue will now be investigated quickly, and the investigation will be completed by 1 June 2021.

- My hope is that we will have a proposal ready before the term of office ends, says Per Bolund.
