The US budget deficit has climbed to more than $ 3 trillion this year, the US Treasury Department said Friday evening.

Record figures, twice as large as those recorded during the financial crisis of 2009. The economy of the world's largest power is bearing the brunt of the consequences of the coronavirus.

It should be remembered that it is the country most affected by the pandemic in the world, ahead of India and Brazil, with more than 218,000 deaths to date and 8 million people infected.

In detail, the federal state budget deficit jumped 218% for the fiscal year ended in September, compared to last year, according to the US Treasury.

At issue: an explosion in public spending and a fall in revenue.

Public spending jumped 47% to reach $ 6.5 trillion.

Direct check to the Americans, short-time working, business loans, in total the White House and Congress launched in March a plan to support the economy of 2.9 billion dollars, extended by 500 billion in April.

But these measures did not prevent tens of millions of job losses, which pushed up unemployment benefits.

If the purchasing power of households was generally maintained thanks to this aid, the revenues paid to the federal state were less important than what it hoped to collect, according to the US Treasury.

The incomes of millions of businesses and Americans have melted and with them the amount of taxes paid to the state, weighing heavily on the country's budget.
