Brexit negotiations were in focus when EU leaders met today in Brussels.

According to SVT's reporter Anna-Maja Persson, the idea was that they would now agree on an agreement for future relations between the EU and the UK.

But instead, the result was that EU leaders called on EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier to continue negotiating and the British to compromise.

- The mantra of EU leaders here in Brussels today has been that they want an agreement with the British, but not at any price, says Anna-Maja Persson in Aktuellt.

No one wants to be blamed

According to her, many in Brussels are now asking themselves whether the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will leave the negotiations that he previously threatened to do.

- I interpret this as meaning that from both sides you want to avoid ending up in a situation where you yourself are to blame for this possibly not going all the way, says Göran von Sydow, political scientist and director of the Swedish Institute for European Studies, Sieps .

But time is running out for negotiations as the transition period expires at the turn of the year.

If you do not agree, major problems can arise, he says.

- It is an integrated market that the UK is leaving.

If you do not agree now, you will fall down to basic rules for what world trade looks like.
