How does gray hair happen?

Your hair follicles contain a pigment called melanin, which is responsible for your hair color.

But you should know that your genetics and external factors like stress, vitamin deficiency and smoking can cause your hair to turn gray instead of your age.

To find out how to prevent premature graying of hair, Dr Manjul Agarwal, a specialist in dermatology at Fortis Hospital in New Delhi, advises following the following tips to prevent premature graying of hair:

1- Treat nutrient deficiencies

According to Dr. Agarwal, people who are deficient in iron, vitamin B12, calcium, copper, and vitamin D can experience premature graying.

It is advised to improve the quality of the food to obtain the substances that are deficient. It is also possible to take nutritional supplements, but you should consult your doctor before starting any supplements or medications.

2- Reduce stress

Stress and stress in your life can cause gray hair.

Stress creates more "free radical" molecules in the body, which can affect the quality and color of your hair.

So try to control stress, take time to relax and pursue the hobbies that you love.

3- Stop smoking

The author pointed out that smoking, just like stress, increases free radicals in your body, which can cause your natural hair color to disappear, and Dr. Agarwal adds that "smoking can increase oxidative stress, which can damage your hair leading to premature graying."

4- Protect your hair from UV rays

As it happens with your skin, ultraviolet rays negatively affect your hair as well, constant exposure to harmful rays can lighten your hair in the long term.

In this context, Dr. Agarwal advises that you cover your hair with a hood, hat or umbrella every time you go out in strong sunlight.

5- Check the thyroid gland

According to Dr. Agarwal, the thyroid gland is a common cause of graying of hair, especially in women. Graying hair can be a result of the thyroid gland not working properly.
