Arjeplog has the country's third highest cost for its high school students at Hornavanskolan.

In total, the operation costs 22 million per year for the municipality.

The municipal board has therefore decided to give the head of education the task of investigating a closure of the upper secondary school operations.

The proposal is about a zero intake of students and a collaboration on education with Arvidsjaur and Skellefteå.

- We have long sought a model that provides a balance between access to upper secondary education in the locality and a sustainable economy, says Isak Utsi (S), chairman of the municipal board.

- Now we have an exciting and sensible solution that we are investigating.

From the autumn of 2021, Skellefteå municipality will offer students in the municipalities of Arjeplog, Malå, Norsjö and Sorsele to choose between four study preparation programs with eleven different specializations.

The first year takes place with distance learning and supervisors on site in the home municipality.

- For students in study preparation programs, the proposal means one year in Arjeplog followed by two years in Skellefteå, says head of education Fredrik Westerlund.
