Protests in Belarus continue and during Sunday's demonstration more than 700 people were arrested, according to Belarusian police.

At least 26 of those arrested were journalists.

The Interior Ministry stated on Monday that the police are now allowed to use sharp weapons against protesters protesting against the regime.

According to the news agency AFP, the Ministry of the Interior writes in its decision, among other things, that the demonstrators have been radicalized.

"The protests have become more organized and extremely radicalized," the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

"Against this background, Home Office staff and troops will not leave the streets and special means and military weapons will be used if necessary."

The majority are being held in custody

During Sunday's protests, the police used water cannons and fired rubber bullets, the human rights organization Vjasna states.

There have also been reports of violence being used against protesters.

The majority of the 700 people arrested on Sunday are still being held in custody.

Since the election on August 9 this year, there have been major protests in the capital Minsk.

President Alexander Lukashenko claims he won a landslide victory, but critics say the election was rigged.
