11 October 2020At least 17 dead and dozens injured represent the toll of a violent collision between a train and a bus that took place this morning in Thailand.

The competent authorities report this.

The bus was headed to a temple in Cha Choeng Sao province - two hours from the capital Bangkok - for a ceremony to mark the end of Buddhist Lent, a district police chief said.

"The death toll we have so far is 17", he specified, adding that the accident occurred around 8 am (3 am in Italy).

Provincial Governor Maitree Tritilanond reported that around 30 people were reportedly injured.

The first aid images showed bodies and objects scattered among the twisted metal sheets: the bus overturned on its side, the roof was torn off, and rescuers reported that a crane was needed to lift it and extract the dead and injured, whose number may increase.

Similar accidents are frequent in Thailand, at the top of the list for the dangerousness of its roads, among the deadliest in the world, for speeding, drunk driving and not very present law enforcement.

According to a 2018 report from the World Health Organization, Thailand has the second highest traffic fatality rate in the world.
