Ersin Tatar, a nationalist candidate supported by Turkey, arrived Sunday 11 October at the head of the first round of the "presidential" election of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), recognized only by Ankara.

He is ahead of outgoing leader Mustafa Akinci, according to the Electoral Council.

With 32.46% of the vote, the pro-Erdogan candidate is ahead of Mustafa Akinci, at odds with the Turkish authorities (29.73%), and Turfan Erhurman (21.62%), two social democrats who advocate the reunification of the Mediterranean island divided in the form of a federal state.

Results communicated by the Electoral Council after the counting of 723 polling stations out of 738. The second round will take place on October 18.
