Vienna remains red, the color of the Social Democrats who obtain more than 40% of the votes according to results which are still provisional because there remain 380,000 postal votes to be counted.

For the mayor, Michael Ludwig, this result is a plebiscite.

It is a strong support for social democracy and my action as mayor,"

he welcomes

.

The gap between our party and the second has widened.

This means that we are trusted more, we can see it in the percentage of votes and in the ratio to our competitors.

 "

In second place, we find the Conservatives, quite far certainly but who progress by nine points compared to the municipal elections of 2015. In progress also, the Greens who obtain 14% of the vote and therefore hope to renew the coalition with the Social Democrats.

“

This result shows that the two coalition partners won: the big and the small.

And that is unusual in times of crisis.

It is therefore, in my opinion, a very clear mandate for the continuation of this coalition

”, explains Birgit Hebein, head of the list of environmentalists.

The big loser of the ballot is the extreme right.

The FPÖ collapsed, garnering less than 8% of the vote, 23 points less than in 2015. Former party leader Heinz-Christian Strache presented a competing list which did not pass the 5% threshold.
