The United Nations Support Mission in Libya announced on Saturday evening the resumption of dialogue sessions between the Libyan parties in Tunisia next month, with the aim of setting governance arrangements and preparing for elections in the shortest possible period.
The Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Stephanie Williams, said in a statement published by the mission that the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum will begin on October 26 with preliminary meetings via video call, while Tunisia will host its first direct meeting in early November, followed by direct talks between Two delegations of the Joint Military Commission (5 + 5) are in Geneva from the 19th of the same month.
The UN mission explained that the forum aims in general to achieve a unified vision regarding the framework and arrangements for governance, which will lead to holding national elections in the shortest possible time frame in order to restore Libya's sovereignty and the democratic legitimacy of Libyan institutions.
The forum - which will witness the participation of all components of the Libyan people - will take into account the recommendations of Montreux, and the understandings reached by the Libyans in the Bouznika and Cairo talks.
The mission indicated that the United Nations will facilitate consultations between the delegations of the Tobruk Parliament and the Supreme Council of State in Tripoli on constitutional issues in Cairo between 11 and 13 October, hosted by the Egyptian government.
The United Nations and the international community hopes to end the worsening crisis in Libya due to the ongoing conflict in this country since 2011, which has caused the dispersion of power and the deterioration of the economic and living situation of Libyans.
