Will the truce hold?

The cease-fire decided by Armenia and Azerbaijan entered into force on Saturday at noon local time to end nearly two weeks of intense fighting in Nagorno Karabakh.

But the authorities of this separatist enclave and the Azerbaijani forces accused each other of continuing the fighting with bombings, missiles and drones.

"Azerbaijani forces launched an attack at 12:05 pm", ie after the entry into force of the ceasefire, said the Armenian defense ministry.

“The enemy is bombing inhabited areas,” the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said in a statement issued 30 minutes after the agreement entered into force.

Hidden for days

Calm had partly returned to the town of Stepanakert, the self-proclaimed capital of the separatist enclave of Nagorno Karabakh, where sirens sounded until shortly before the agreement entered into force.

Residents were venturing on their steps to look at the sky and listen to them, after days in hiding to protect themselves from the bombardments, an AFP journalist testified on the spot.
