The Spanish government declared a state of emergency for two weeks in Madrid, the capital city, and nine cities and counties around the city on the 9th local time.

Foreign media such as the AFP and the Associated Press said health minister Salvador Iya declared the measure and explained that "measures are needed to protect the health of Madrid residents and prevent the spread to other regions."

According to this event, 4.8 million people residing in 10 cities and counties in the Madrid metropolitan area will be restricted from moving outside the area for the next two weeks, except for exceptions such as attending work, attending school, and hospital treatment.

The in-house bars and restaurants only accept half of the manual number and must be closed at 11pm.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population in Madrid is 564, more than double the average of 257 in the rest of Spain.
