  On September 28, the State Power Investment Corporation announced in Shanghai the landmark achievement of my country's third-generation nuclear power autonomy-China's independent nuclear power technology brand and the world's advanced third-generation nuclear power model "Guohe No. 1".

  One year ago, in September 2019, my country’s first nuclear safety white paper, China’s Nuclear Safety, published by the Information Office of the State Council, pointed out that China’s nuclear industry has formed a complete nuclear industry system to ensure energy security, protect the ecological environment, and It has made important contributions to improving people's living standards and promoting high-quality economic development, and it has also embarked on a path to nuclear safety with Chinese characteristics.

  Third and fourth generation nuclear power moves from drawings to reality

  On September 2, Premier Li Keqiang of the State Council presided over an executive meeting of the State Council.

The meeting approved the Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Phase II project using Hualong No. 1 third-generation nuclear power technology and the Zhejiang Sanao Nuclear Power Phase I project in which private capital invested for the first time.

The total effective investment of the two projects exceeds 70 billion yuan, which will drive a large number of jobs.

  On May 7, 2015, the first concrete tank of Fuqing Unit 5, the world's first demonstration project of Hualong No. 1, was poured, marking the official start of the project.

For more than five years, Fuqing Nuclear Power Unit 5 has progressed smoothly, and the construction according to the planned progress has become an important label, and it is expected to be put into operation before the end of this year.

In addition, Hualong No. 1 has landed in Ningde, Zhangzhou, and Fangcheng Port.

  Xing Ji, chief designer of China National Nuclear Corporation Hualong No. 1 and chief engineer of China Nuclear Power Engineering Co., Ltd., said that as the construction of Hualong No. 1 continues, the scale effect and integration effect brought about by this will drive domestic equipment manufacturing companies to continuously improve their technology and management. Level and promote the overall transformation and upgrading of the high-end equipment manufacturing industry.

  In the past five years, my country's three-generation nuclear power technology projects, including the AP1000 project in Sanmen and Haiyang, and the EPR project in Taishan, have also achieved power generation.

  In Shidao Bay, Shandong, the fourth-generation nuclear power technology-the world's first modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor demonstration power station has completed civil construction and installation, and has entered a comprehensive commissioning stage.

All parties involved in the construction are making every effort to advance in accordance with the goal of building power generation by the end of 2021.

  As of the end of December 2019, my country had 47 nuclear power plants in operation with a total installed capacity of 48.75 million kilowatts, second only to the United States and France, and ranked third in the world. The total installed nuclear power capacity accounted for 2.42% of the country's total installed power capacity.

At the same time, a number of nuclear-related laws and regulations such as the Atomic Energy Law and Nuclear Power Management Regulations are being formulated quickly.

  Steady advancement of nuclear energy in the future

  On July 28 this year, the launch ceremony for the installation of a major project of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) program was held in France.

  The International Thermonuclear Fusion Experimental Reactor Project is the world’s largest and most influential international science project. my country formally signed a contract to join the project in 2006.

This is the largest international scientific and technological cooperation project that my country has participated in as equals.

  In 2017, researchers active in the field of fusion research gathered together to discuss the ITER project and the future path of global fusion energy research and development. More than 30 foreign experts in the international fusion field and more than 10 Chinese experts drafted and signed the "Beijing The Declaration of Fusion-Supporting the Development of China's Fusion Energy", the declaration believes that China will deliver high-quality components for ITER on time, showing that China has played an important role in ITER, and further advocated that scientists in the world fusion community should strengthen the research and development of fusion energy related technologies. Cooperation to contribute to the ultimate solution to the world's energy shortage and environmental pollution problems.

  Nuclear energy utilization trends from power generation to diversification

  At the beginning of this year, with the development of the new crown epidemic, rapid epidemic prevention or rapid treatment became the top priority.

Previously, most of my country's national standard medical protective clothing was sterilized by ethylene oxide, which took 7 to 14 days.

However, medical equipment, especially disposable protective clothing, is consumed too quickly, and how to make its production capacity keep up with demand in a timely manner has become a major problem.

  Nuclear technology was "delivered in danger" in the prevention and control of the epidemic. From February 9th to 24th, 44 units in the nuclear industry field completed 1.39 million sets of medical disposable protective clothing irradiation sterilization.

According to the "Emergency Specification for Irradiation and Sterilization of Medical Disposable Protective Clothing (Temporary)" during the epidemic, the irradiation (cobalt 60 or electron accelerator) technology adopted can shorten the sterilization time to less than one day.

  It can not only be used in irradiation production, but also can provide a heat source for clean heating in winter in northern areas.

In 2019, the first phase of the 700,000-square-meter nuclear heating project in Shandong Haiyang officially supplied heat, marking the official launch of the country's first nuclear commercial heating project.

  In the future, nuclear energy will also play an important role in industrial steam supply, desalination, hydrogen production from residual electricity, isotope production, and refrigeration.
