The Ministry of Defense in the Libyan Government of National Accord reported that there was news of a possible attack by retired Major General Khalifa Haftar on 3 cities in the west of the country, and called on its forces to prepare in anticipation of any emergency.

On Thursday, the Anadolu news agency quoted the private Libya Al-Ahrar channel as saying that the Minister of Defense in the Government of National Accord Salah Al-Nimroush sent an urgent telegram to the General Staff of the Army and the Western Region Operations Room.

According to the cable, information received by the Ministry of Defense indicates that Haftar's forces may attack the cities of Bani Walid, Gharyan and Tarhuna.

Al-Nimroush called on the army chief of staff, the commander of the military regions and the joint operations room in the western region, to take all measures to repel and prevent any attack by Haftar's forces, with utmost caution and caution.

The disclosure of this information comes while since last August 21 a fragile ceasefire has prevailed, announced separately by the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord and the House of Representatives convened in Tobruk (eastern Libya) in support of Haftar.

Al-Wefaq Forces have repeatedly accused Haftar's forces of violating the ceasefire by targeting their forces stationed west of the city of Sirte (450 kilometers east of Tripoli). It contains Russian mercenaries, and the US Forces Africa Command confirmed that Russia had deployed warplanes in support of Haftar.

On April 4, 2019, Haftar launched an attack on Tripoli, and also took control of the cities of Tarhuna, Gharyan and Bani Walid, which are not far from the capital, but by last June it was subjected to a series of resounding defeats to be defeated from all of the Libyan west.

The political process


Meanwhile, the Presidency Council of the Libyan Government of National Accord stressed the importance of resuming the political, security and economic process in the country, according to the outcomes of the Berlin Conference held last January, and stressed the need to solve the Libyan crisis politically.

In a meeting held in Tripoli, Thursday, the members of the Council discussed the current political, security and military situation in the country, and made a general assessment of the regional and international positions towards the Libyan crisis.

The Council discussed the measures taken to improve the performance of the services sector, and the continuous follow-up of the General Electricity Company to complete the implementation of its projects and programs for the maintenance of electricity networks.

The United Nations and Qatar welcomed yesterday the understandings reached by the delegations of the Supreme Council of State and the Tobruk Parliament in Morocco regarding the criteria and mechanisms for appointing leadership positions in sovereign institutions, as stipulated in the political agreement signed in Morocco in 2015.
