Chief Minister Nicola Sturgeon has banned the sale of alcohol

inside pubs in Scotland for 16 days, in a new battery of Coronavirus restrictions.

Pubs, cafes and restaurants may be open from six in the morning to six in the afternoon without serving alcohol, the sale of which will only be authorized until ten at night

only in pubs with outdoor service

.

The drastic new measure has created confusion among Scots and

has been condemned as "a blow to the industry"

by James Whithers, CEO of Scotland Food and Drink.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland have decided to continue for the time being as before - with the early closure at 10 pm but without alcohol restrictions - although Health Secretary Matt Hancock

does not rule out new and imminent restrictions

after the 14,162 cases of Coronavirus registered Tuesday in the United Kingdom.

Sturgeon, who has almost always been ahead of

Prime Minister

Boris Johnson in imposing restrictive measures against the pandemic,

has also imposed total prohibition

(except for hotels and stores) in five districts with an especially high number of infections:

Glasgow, Lanarkshite, Lotians, Ayrshire and Forth Valley.

The chief minister justified the new measures in the Scottish Parliament

claiming that they are "essential"

to avoid the chances of the virus "jumping from house to house".

"That risk is higher in closed locations, without good ventilation and where it is difficult to control the movement of people," Sturgeon said.

"The presence of alcohol can affect people's willingness to maintain physical distance."

The announcement came hours after the verbal exchange in Westminster between

Premier

Boris Johnson and

Labor opposition leader Keir Starmer

, who claimed the scientific evidence that has justified the closure at 10 p.m. of pubs and restaurants.

Labor could join forces with the 100

rebellious

Tories

threatening to force a parliamentary vote on the latest restrictions.

Lockdown

In his closing remarks at the Conservative Party conference, Boris Johnson

expressed his disappointment at having had to resort to confinement

and other restrictive measures, but assured that "there is no reasonable alternative" to combat the Coronavirus.

More than 12 million Britons, especially in the north of England,

are affected by local confinements

imposed by the Government, which intends to implement a new system of local alerts by zones (green, amber, red) in the coming days.

As

The Daily Telegraph

reports

, Johnson faces stiff resistance within his own cabinet, beginning with his Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak, who last week urged the British to "live without fear."

International Trade Secretary Liz Truss joined the criticism Wednesday, warning that the imposition of new restrictions

would be "a step backwards" for companies
