Sources reported to Al-Jazeera that an Egyptian officer was killed and two other army personnel were wounded on Monday, as a result of an explosion near a military post west of Sheikh Zuweid in North Sinai.
The bombing comes weeks after a similar bombing killed and wounded 7 soldiers, including 3 officers. The "Sinai Province" organization affiliated with ISIS often claims attacks on the army and security forces in North Sinai.
The bombing came at a time when Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi presided over the meeting of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces on Monday.
The meeting discussed a number of files related to the activities and tasks of the armed forces, and their efforts to protect the pillars of national security on all strategic directions, and to combat terrorism, according to the official Egyptian Middle East News Agency.
On the other hand, pictures circulating on social media platforms showed residents of a number of villages in North Sinai gathered, demanding to return to their homes that they were displaced from due to the clashes between ISIS and the army in that area last July.
The people of those villages - which are Qatiya, Qatiya, al-Qara, al-Janayn, and al-Mraih - chanted slogans expressing their attachment to Sinai, stressing that they are living in very difficult conditions after being forced to leave their homes, lands and sources of livelihood.
The videos showed appeals from the villagers to allow them to return, before the army forces stopped them and asked them to wait.
The people tried to pass the obstacles set by the army, before the attempts to calm and return them succeeded, amid chants of "the army and the people are one hand."
