  • The “White House Gift Shop” site has put up for sale a commemorative coin on which we can read “President Donald J. Trump defeats the Covid”.

  • Despite its name, this commercial site is no longer linked to the American presidency.

Of questionable taste?

While Donald Trump is still hospitalized after having tested positive for Covid-19, the site “White House Gift Shop” (“Souvenir shop of the White House”) put up for sale a commemorative medal on which one can read “The President Donald J. Trump defeats the Covid ”.

The object aroused the disbelief of certain Internet users, who questioned its authenticity.

The part, which costs 100 dollars (85 euros), is however available on the shopping site.

The name of the site created confusion.

However, it has no connection with the White House.

A site "not affiliated with the White House"

Anthony Giannini, presented as the site's CEO, explained in April to the American fact-checking site Snopes that his site "is not affiliated with the White House, and the White House is not involved in any of our decisions, products or operations ”.

The online store specifies that the coin is part of a series commemorating the "historic moments" of Donald Trump's presidency.

Although the visual of the object is not yet available, the creator explains that his new design "is inspired by the graphic art of superheroes" and he compares the presidency of Donald Trump to "the epic of Gilgamesh ".

The store has had ties to the White House in the past: it was established in 1946 by President Truman.

In 2012, Anthony Giannini's company obtained ownership of the store and, in 2016, the trademark “White House Gift Shop”.

Donald Trump reached Walter Reed Hospital near Washington by helicopter, where he is being treated after testing positive for Covid-19.

He made a brief surprise appearance in public on Sunday.
