Referendum in New Caledonia: the "no" to independence in mind

The "no" to the independence of New Caledonia came first this Sunday, according to the still partial results of the self-determination referendum involving more than two-thirds of the votes.

After counting more than two-thirds of the votes cast, the loyalist vote collected nearly 55% of the votes, against 45% for the independence vote, according to figures from the French overseas ministry.

The results of several polling stations in Nouméa, which weighs 30% of the electorate and which voted massively against independence in the previous referendum in 2018, are not yet known.

The

participation rate

is estimated at nearly 86%, up five points compared to 2018. The "no" had won at the time with 56.7% of the vote.
