On Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received the Chairman of the Presidency Council of the Libyan Government of Accord, Fayez al-Sarraj, while the Turkish presidential spokesman made statements about the future of military relations between the two sides after Sarraj left office.
Anadolu Agency reported that Erdogan and Al-Sarraj held a closed meeting in Vahiddin Palace in Istanbul.
Earlier, sources told Al-Jazeera correspondent that talks between the two sides deal with recent developments in the Libyan arena and bilateral relations, especially after the United Nations registered the maritime agreement signed by the two parties.
The spokesman for the Turkish presidency, Ibrahim Kalin, said during a press interview this morning that the United Nations' registration of this agreement is clear evidence that it was concluded according to international principles.
In a related context, the Turkish presidency spokesman said that the Libyan Presidential Council could transform into a new structure.
In an interview with a local channel, the Turkish presidency spokesman said that Sarraj's intention to submit his resignation may be a reaction to some contentious issues in Libya.
Al-Sarraj had announced earlier that he intends to hand over power this October.
Kalin stressed that the Turkish-Libyan relations are not based on people, stressing Turkey's support for the legitimate Libyan government, and its conclusion of a military cooperation agreement with it.
Kalin stressed that the Turkish-Libyan agreements will continue, adding, "We continue to work with other actors, and we have very good relations with the political parties in Tripoli."
And he indicated that the Libyans are aware that the Turkish intervention carries historical and decisive importance, explaining that Turkey will continue to work with whoever is elected to head the Libyan Presidency Council.
