Catalonia.The mayor of Argentona, from the CUP, resigns after admitting sexual abuse
Former deputy and former CUP leader Quim Arrufat left the party in 2019 after an internal complaint for sexual assault, according to the newspaper Ara and confirmed the anti-capitalist formation in a statement.
Arrufat, who was one of the first three CUP deputies in the Parliament, between 2012 and 2015, left the political organization in April 2019 just before the municipal elections in which he planned to participate, on the list for Vilanova i la Geltrú (Barcelona).
It was not the first time that Arrufat had been denounced for similar circumstances.
Specifically, the internal statutes of the formation of the pro-independence left emphasize that with internal complaints of abuse or sexual assault you must leave the party.
The two episodes, one from 2014 and the other from Arrufat's last months in the organization, were managed internally by the party, through the commission that handles complaints of sexist attacks.
After publicly breaking the news, the CUP has issued a statement confirming the facts: "Quim Arrufat was in the middle of a process of management of sexist aggressions and, while it was being managed through its own protocol that the CUP, left the militancy ".
The CUP reaffirms its "clear and firm commitment in the fight against patriarchy and against sexist aggressions" and "condemns the aggression", while confirming that "this has been the priority" since this aggression "was made known "of the organization.
"We assume and recognize that there are cases of aggression within the organization and that the CUP is not alien to patriarchy in general or to sexist aggressions in particular," he admits in his statement, in which he recalls that he has approved a " its own protocol "to deal with this type of case and has created a commission that handles complaints.
The CUP "respects the anonymity and protection of the person attacked to avoid victimizing them doubly."
The CUP protocol establishes that a repetition of this type of accusation, once analyzed and investigated internally, implies for the aggressor his expulsion from the party, although Arrufat left him before a suspension of membership took effect.
