This year's fire season in the western United States has been devastating, millions of acres of land have been destroyed and 30 people have died so far.

In the past week, more than 2,000 firefighters have participated in the extinguishing work.

The fires in the now-surrounded areas are among the third and fourth worst forest fires in California history.

It took over six weeks for the firefighters to gain control of them.

But the work is not over.

Right now, firefighters are fighting to gain control of 24 major fires, according to Newsweek.

Four dead

Two of the largest fires are raging in Northern California.

Southwest of the city of Redding, a fire has broken out that has so far claimed four lives.

39 percent of the area is now under control, according to authorities.

Another major fire has been raging for four days in the counties of Napa and Sonoma.

500 buildings have been destroyed and only five percent of the area is under control.

Ruined wine harvest

Napa is the most famous wine district in the USA and Sonoma's county manager Susan Gorin tells CNN that the fire smoke has destroyed the wine harvest:

- The grapes will be left to rot, they are damaged by smoke.
