  • Friday, these health professionals, whether hospital, liberal or private, urged Toulouse residents to be more respectful of barrier gestures, especially in a festive environment.

  • These doctors are asking for awareness, in particular of young people for whom the disease is benign but who infect their parents and grandparents.

  • In the absence of a rapid reaction, they fear that the Pink City will undergo more restrictive measures to end the epidemic and lower the tension in hospitals.

They are raising the alarm for real respect for barrier gestures on the part of all categories of the population.

Hospital doctors from the Toulouse University Hospital, private and professional clinics from the liberal world sounded the alarm on Friday as to the active circulation of the coronavirus in Haute-Garonne and in the Toulouse metropolitan area.

These caregivers highlight a gap between the seriousness of the epidemic situation, which creates tension in hospitals, and the actual application of barrier measures in the field.

"In certain categories of the population, compliance with barrier measures regulates and reduces contamination, but in general, we cannot continue like this with more and more hospitalized patients", insisted Marc Penaud, general manager of the Toulouse University Hospital.

Avoid deprivation measures

At the end of the summer, the epidemic regained strength, especially among the youngest, without, initially, increasing the number of hospitalizations and deaths.

But while the illness may be mild for students, the lack of awareness begins to have serious consequences for older people.

"In August, there was still the post-containment benefit but today, the incidence rate is on the rise in all age groups," insisted Pierre Delobel, head of the infectious diseases department at the CHU.

We are at a turning point where we can act with better respect for the barrier measures of the youngest.

We are not yet at the spring figures but we will be in great difficulty in the short term ”.

Pr Stéphane Oustric "beware the family circle is not protective"

To avoid new measures of deprivation of liberty, the doctors plead for a start.

"We need collective intelligence in order to avoid delays in care for certain patients, as was the case during the first wave," assures Stéphane Oustric, president of the Departmental Council of the Order of Physicians.

We need a reaction from the population otherwise we are going to face a problem that cannot be controlled.

The population must play the game of barrier gestures, even in the private sphere ”.

Already unscheduled operations

To absorb the increase in Covid patients, the CHU and private clinics have already started to deprogram certain operations.

For Cyrille Chaugne, representative of the Regional Union of Health Professionals, “we must break the chain of spread of the epidemic and it is insufficient for the moment.

We see that barrier gestures are not always respected in festive places.

If we want these moments of social bond to last, we need a reaction ”.

Faced with the speed of spread of the virus, which is starting to have an impact on the health system, these doctors call for more responsibility on the part of the population.
