Marbella, 1967. The edition of the San Sebastián Film Festival that ended on Saturday left in its strange film section 'An optical effect', by Juan Cavestany, starring

Carmen Machi

and

Pepón Nieto

, known for starring in series such as 'Periodistas' and 'Los Hombres de Paco', who is now on tour with the play 'An Host'.

Did you miss doing interviews? There is a lot of interest in the film and I love that. Just as I am very pleased that the San Sebastian Festival is being held, in the same way that the Malaga or Venice Festival did, that suddenly within this absurd normality that we have had, there are green shoots and we can sit down, even if it is with distance and mask, to talk about a movie. That there is something to do, after so long without doing anything. Even if it has nothing to do with what is happening, 'An optical effect' speaks of estrangement. Why do movies seem to anticipate reality? It seems timely, yes. It happens like with the letters of Fangoria and the lack of love. You fight with your partner and it turns out that a Fangoria song from 10 years ago tells exactly what is happening to you. If we had not had this pandemic situation, the movie would work the same for other things. It's that we are very confused by life and these characters as well. What is it like to be an actor in a movie that you don't really know what it is or what happens? I wasn't very aware of the work we were doing in time loops, which are also emotional. . Many times, I was very lost as an actor. But I have learned a lot from the example of Carmen Machi when it comes to dealing with work, which she does with absolute freedom and leaving herself in the hands of the director. Especially when this is Juan Cavestany, who is such an authoritative director that his language is so much his. The movie is John Cavestany. He has opened the doors of his head and allowed us to get in for a while and play with his toys. How would you define the script for 'An optical effect'? It is that it suffered many mutations, it is a mutant script. The movie ended a week ago and until then things were getting into that we didn't know there would be. I can't intellectualize my work because I would lie to you.In one scene from the movie, you and Machi go down a ladder. It is the same one that Joaquin Phoenix descends in 'Joker', right? It is mounted with a ladder exactly the same in Madrid, behind the English Court of Nuevos Ministerios. You and Machi play 'normies'. I really like that it is not a couple special, but a conventional middle-class couple a little gray. And what tells about the empty nest syndrome, about that fear that parents have when a daughter leaves home. That recognizable naturalness in a couple that you cross on the street and who are wearing those jackets, those red pants, those crossed bags, the checkered scarf. Returning to the second question, why do we read everything now in Covid code? Probably, being in a situation in which life has to be sought a lot, as it sharpens the senses. Many times it coincides that these types of films appear at such awful moments, it is like there is a point of light there. And why are there still politicians and a sector of the population who criticize Spanish culture? That anti-culture discourse, that of the "subsidized" and all that, is due to a lack of soul, of empathy with the other. Culture is essential in our life and when what has happened to us in this country has happened, we have clung to that. People didn't know what the hell was going to happen, but they played a record, grabbed a book, or watched a series. And that united us to the other even if you were locked up in your house. Even a political party spoke that prioritizing the farmers over the "puppeteers." These types of people have never come to see us at the theater or buy a book by Javier Marías. They are very mediocre and very gray and they want the world to be just as mediocre and gray as they are, because they have little talent and little concern for culture and life in general. What do you think? People and the rest of them. political parties do not have to whitewash or normalize that. It's an aberration, those kinds of speeches are terrible. And we also have to learn as citizens to distinguish what is right from what is wrong. And if you identify with that evil, then maybe you are, so throw 'pallá'. Could it be a false dichotomy? It's not about whether the farmer is more important than the artist. In 15 years it will be analyzed because it says a lot about us as a society. We have been very hypocritical: the same people who were rapturous clapping at eight o'clock in the afternoon, then, as soon as they could, they threw themselves into the Salamanca district to protest without masks and hitting clubs with golf clubs. have we reacted to the pandemic? It is very curious how we have functioned as a society. At first we thought we were going to come out much stronger. As soon as there was some kind of conflict for anything, it was used politically, from the first moment. People also immediately unleashed hatred and contempt for each other. Why do we always come back to the same thing? We like to command a lot too. Having the position where we can say something to the other. When we meet before a performance at the theater we take a photo of ourselves. And you upload it to instagram and the first thing: "Put on the mask!". And 50 responses like that. What people like the most is having the chance to become a cop for a day.
