This is what Bill Gates said in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly reported exclusively by Corriere della Sera.
"The world is on the eve of a great scientific breakthrough: in all likelihood a safe and effective vaccine against Covid-19 will be available early next year. Indeed, there will perhaps be more than one," says Bill Gates. stressing that however "the eradication of the disease will not happen automatically" because "it is necessary to ensure that there is the effective capacity to produce billions of doses of the vaccine, to find the funding to implement it and to identify the most suitable strategies for its distribution".
Bill Gates then illustrates the new prediction models developed by Northeastern University, which help understand what happens if vaccine distribution is unequal.
"The researchers analyzed two possible scenarios.
In the first, vaccines are distributed to all countries based on the number of inhabitants. In the second, we find a situation that is very close to what is happening these days, namely that the Fifty richest countries on the planet will have the first two billion doses of the vaccine available. In this scenario, the virus will continue to spread uncontrolled for four months in three quarters of the globe. And we will see the number of victims double ", explains Bill Gates.
"It would be a moral catastrophe," he adds.
