The Pope has appointed Fabiola Gianotti as ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, general director of the Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire (CERN) in Geneva (Switzerland).

Fabiola Gianotti - the Vatican recalls - was born in Rome on October 29, 1960. She obtained a PhD in experimental particle physics at the University of Milan in 1989. Since 1994 she has been a researcher at Cern. In July 2012, during the seminar that made the discovery of the Higgs boson official, he presented the results of the research. Since 2016 she has held the position of Director General of CERN, thus becoming the first woman to take on this role. She has been a member of numerous international scientific committees and of the advisory committee of the Secretary General of the United Nations. He has received several honorary doctorates and international awards. He is a Corresponding Member of many Academies and author or co-author of an important number of scientific publications.
