The woman was admitted to a residence in Sölvesborg municipality from the end of December 2018 to January 2019 and had a documented medical history of risk factors such as stroke.

Relatives pointed out the symptoms

According to the report, made by a close relative, relatives noticed that the patient repeatedly experienced difficulty finding words, spoke slurred speech and was even slanted in the corner of the mouth at a later time.

Relatives' experiences of the incident are that the nurses did not take their concerns seriously, which meant that the patient had had a similar appearance before.

The patient herself informed one of the nurses that she had previously had atrial fibrillation.

Then a planned doctor's appointment was booked next week, but then it was too late.

For the next day, the woman's condition worsened with high blood pressure, weakness in one arm and impaired speech.

She was taken to hospital but died five days later.

Lack of treatment and medical assessment

Now the nurses who treated the patient are criticized by IVO, the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate.

They are criticized for deficiencies in medical assessment when no checks have been performed to rule out suspicion of stroke, and that the documentation in the patient record has been deficient.
