LKAB wants to build a fossil-free industrial park for the recycling of mining waste and the production of raw materials.

The mining company wants, among other things, to create fertilizer for agriculture with its ReeMAP project, which aims to use and develop technology for recycling mining waste in a more environmentally friendly way.

LKAB also wants to produce inputs, such as hydrogen, and electrify the processes.

- The ambition is to be able to almost completely eliminate carbon dioxide emissions in the process, says David Högnelid.

Location

What will determine whether the industrial park ends up in Luleå, Skellefteå or Helsingborg?

- An area of up to 50 hectares will be needed for the facilities.

In addition, we need a train connection so that we can ship out one million tonnes of products.

We also need access to a port, concludes David Högnelid.

LKAB's feasibility study will run until 2021. The mining company hopes to be able to start full production in 2027.

The project expects, among other things, to produce mineral fertilizer that can save up to 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions (which according to the company's data corresponds to one percent of Sweden's emissions in 2019) compared to using the technology currently used to produce mineral fertilizers.

SVT has previously reported on LKAB's plans to turn the waste from the mine into manure for agriculture.
