27 September 2020 "We are living in a time of renewal, we cannot go back to normal". It is the Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, who pronounces this sentence in his speech, via video link, at the Festival of Civil Economy in progress in Florence. An intervention that has focused heavily on the observation that nothing can be the same as before Covid.

"Regeneration must be felt even more in times of crisis. This pandemic has altered social and human dynamics" added the premier. "We must face this moment with the utmost intellectual rigor. Italy expresses one of the most important cultural movements in Europe. Even in terms of ideas, the Italian tradition has had an elaboration of thought centered on the community".

"We are in an acute phase of an emergency of historical proportions. Today capitalism must express new practices compared to the last few decades, especially as citizens are starting to reject the individualistic lifestyles of the past". The premier also remembers Giorgio La Pira and Sergio Paronetto, whom he defines as "one of the brightest minds among Catholic economists who spoke about the role of public enterprise in the economic system: there is an incredible sensitivity towards the distortions that the modern social economy can produce ". "Work - he added, citing La Pira - cannot be reduced to a mere opportunity for production and a mere source of income, but is the tool with which the citizen contributes to the moral and material progress of society. Now - the premier reiterated - the old way of understanding capitalism is fading. Individuals who have become perfect consumers are awakening from their torpor, the market economy is giving way to a new phase of the community market ".

"I want to make an announcement: Florence proves to be the city of choice, the most suitable venue for hosting a great international confrontation due to its sensitivity: we agree with the mayor Dario Nardella that at the beginning of next year we will meet in Florence to discuss, deepen and give concrete substance to the new humanism. It will be a great international event. We are not talking about a slogan but a manifesto of ideas and values ​​that we want to translate into practice and actions. To contaminate the whole world as in the past ".

"When we go to confront Il Cipe on the various projects, we will do it with the awareness of being bound to a sustainable development of the projects themselves. Pope Francis in his words wished a new humanism also in the economy, in which men and women are no longer considered waste. We will not shirk this moral value ".

"This is a time of renewal. The regeneration of the economy is to be understood as a new theoretical paradigm, but also as a hope for a more authentic form of relations between public and private the citizen and the person are new to the center. We must recover the spirit of humanism. We must rediscover an Italian way to the economy and propose it to our community and beyond ".
