"Collective treason" ... A source close to Macron comments on a polite apology for forming the Lebanese government

A source close to the French President, Emmanuel Macron, told Reuters today, Saturday, that

the Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Mustafa Adeeb's

apology

for forming the government means that political parties in Lebanon have committed "collective treason."

The source added that "France will remain with Lebanon to help it get out of the crisis the country is going through."

The French presidency stated that Macron will hold a press conference on Sunday to discuss the political situation in Lebanon.

Under the French road map, the new government was to take quick steps to combat corruption and implement needed reforms that would secure billions of dollars in international aid to save an economy reeling under a mountain of public debt.

Lebanon received another blow when the massive explosion occurred in the port of Beirut on the fourth of August and destroyed a large area of the capital.

Adeeb announced, earlier today, that he will step down from the task of forming the government after efforts that lasted nearly a month, but he said that Lebanon should not abandon the French initiative.

He said after meeting President Michel Aoun, "I assure that this initiative must continue because it expresses the sincere intention of the friendly French state and of President Macron personally to support and support Lebanon."

Adeeb tried to form a government of experts in a country in which sects share power and where political loyalties are divided along sectarian lines.

"With the effort to form a government reaching its final stages, it became clear to me that this consensus on the basis of which I accepted this national mission in this difficult circumstance in the history of Lebanon is no longer valid," he said in a statement of apology.

He continued, "And since a group with the specifications that I have set is already doomed to failure, and out of my concern for national unity with its constitutionality and charter, I apologize for pursuing the task of forming the government, wishing for those who will be chosen for the arduous task after me and for those who will choose him full success in facing the imminent dangers facing our country, our people and our economy." .

Politicians in Lebanon had promised Paris to form a government by mid-September.

But Adeeb's efforts were in vain due to a dispute over ministerial portfolios, especially the Finance Ministry, whose leadership will have a vital role in setting up a program to lift Lebanon out of the grinding economic crisis.

"It is a setback, but we will not give up," a French diplomatic source said after Adib's resignation.

Adeeb held several meetings with prominent politicians, but failed to reach consensus on how to choose the finance minister.
