Interview.Juan Carlos Monedero: "If you don't do sports, you become a mushroom"
Curious: Monedero's father compares Abascal with Franco: "They both loved Spain above all else"
Juan Carlos Monedero (57) attended last Sunday the demonstration of the residents of the neighborhoods confined by Díaz Ayuso to try to stop the spread of the coronavirus in Madrid.
A few hours later, an image of the founder of Podemos began to circulate on social networks in Numa Pompilio, an Italian restaurant in the Salamanca district whose cover does not go below
35 euros.
The photograph went viral and the podemita was accused of being hypocritical.
It is not the first time that Monedero has been criticized for his behavior, branded as inconsistent in someone who defends communism and is a
member of the United We Can ranks
.
"I went to lunch on Friday invited by a journalist," explains aLOC.
According to his version, two days later he attended the aforementioned demonstration
dressed the same as on Friday
for lunch.
The outfit -red neck warmer, white T-shirt and dark sweatshirt- has also been the subject of criticism, as the latest garment belongs to a brand that sells them for just over one hundred euros: "I bought it
at an outlet in Bogotá
and I think it cost me more than 20 euros, "he tells LOC.
Despite Monedero's explanations, party sources consulted by LOC assure that he
has a "bad reputation"
within the formation: "His particular interest is above Podemos", they conclude.
Juan Carlos Monedero is, in addition to a university professor, the sole administrator of a political consultancy with which he has advised Latin American governments.
In 2013 he
earned more than 400,000 euros
with these jobs and in 2018 the company ended up with an asset of one million euros.
"When I have needed money for a political project I have looked for it and I have earned it. But that money that I have earned I have not spent it on myself,
I have spent it on
political
projects
like La Tuerka. I have a scooter and a modest house" , defends itself.
The journalist
Luca Constantini,
author of the book
Here I command
, highlights that mixture of the professional and the personal in the profile of Monedero: "He lives from Podemos because of his particular interests, which coincide with those of the party.
He opens doors in other countries
but he needs the party to have a letter of introduction ", he assures.
Last July, Iglesias appointed him
director of the Fundación Instituto 25M
.
According to Constantini, he did it as a way to silence the criticisms made by the founder about the formation.
A new position for the ideologue of the party, who has not been on political lists but who influences from outside.
Purse in Casa BigoteRedes
The one at the Salamanca neighborhood restaurant is the latest of the scandals carried out by Monedero.
This summer he visited a restaurant in Cádiz from which he had to leave after receiving insults from two diners.
His visit to the establishment had consequences for another, the famous Casa Bigote in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, which
many confused with the place
he went to: "When I saw that the owner of Casa Bigote was attacked, I approached there and took a picture with the person in charge to say that this place had nothing to do with it. What there is no right is that a Banca March employee and an agricultural entrepreneur believe they have the right to say who can go or not to a place, "he insists.
"Which
shows a
furious
class hatred
."
A PRIVILEGED
Although he does not go into describing what class he refers to, he does define himself: "
I am privileged
because I am a university professor, my salary is more than double the average in this country. I am middle class, university professors we are clearly
middle class
, "he says.
"What do you think, that people who fight for equality like choped more than loin or ham? If someone thinks that they fight better in a 40-meter flat, cold and hungry, without books or training he is wrong, "he clarifies.
Monedero has not spoken with Iglesias about viral photography, but reveals to LOC that on Sunday he went out
to eat again
: "To a vegan restaurant in Argüelles, appropriate to my salary as a teacher."
