Dr Congo: militia attack kills ten in Lubumbashi

In the DRC, Lubumbashi, the country's second city, experienced an incursion early this Saturday morning, September 26, by Bakata Katanga militiamen.

The official report shows three elements of the police killed, 16 dead from the assailants and a dozen men captured.

The NGO Justicia ASBL draws up a provisional toll of 4 dead on the side of the loyalist forces and 5 wounded, and ten of the dead among the attackers.

The Bakata Katanga is this militia which militates for secession of the mining province of Katanga.

According to several sources, gunshots rang out in downtown Lubumbashi around midnight.

Visibly gun-free Bakata Katanga militiamen took over the post office square in the city center.

They reportedly hoisted the flag of the independent state of Katanga.

According to the provincial Ministry of the Interior, the attackers wanted to take control of the governorate of Haut Katanga province, Kasapa prison and the antenna of the Congo National Radio Television (RTNC).

Some Lushois denounce the attitude of the police.

A video circulating on social networks shows police officers harassing the body of an alleged assailant under the gaze of jubilant passers-by.
