Wu Yuanbin, an official with the Chinese Ministry of Health, said that 11 Chinese vaccines are being developed, out of a total of 59 projects that have now entered the clinical trial phase.

"At the moment, research and development projects in China for vaccines against COVID-19 occupy an important place," he added.

He continued: "We found that the safety of the vaccines was at a good level and there were no serious side effects."

The officials said that hundreds of thousands of people who have jobs considered essential in ports, hospitals and other high-risk areas received a dose of an experimental vaccine in July, explaining that this program received support from the World Health Organization.

"The safety of the emergency vaccine has been fully verified, but its effectiveness has not been fully certified," said the National Health Commission official, Qing Zhongwei, pledging that the final product will be available to the public.
