September 25, 2020 Italy has seen a slow and progressive worsening of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic for eight weeks which is reflected in an increased burden on health services.

This trend, although it reflects a trend common to many European countries, in Italy is for now more contained.

This should not lead to underestimating the risk of a rapid epidemic recovery due to an excessive relaxation of the measures, with the authorization of events and initiatives at risk of aggregation in public places, and of individual behaviors also linked to moments of impromptu aggregation.

Thus the weekly monitoring of the Ministry of Health-Iss for the week 14-20 September (updated to 22 September).

Ten Regions and Autonomous Provinces reported an increase in the number of diagnosed cases compared to the previous week, according to the ISS and the Ministry of Health bulletin. The increase cannot be attributed solely to an increase in imported cases (from foreign / or from another Region) or an increase in screening activity.

Most of the cases reported (84.2%) continue to be contracted on the national territory, with a slight decrease in cases imported from abroad (8% of new cases diagnosed this week against 10.8% the previous week) and also of cases imported from another Region / PA (3.3% in the current week against 5.5% the previous week).

27.6% of new cases diagnosed throughout the country were identified through screening activities, while 35.8% in contact tracing activities.

The remaining cases were identified as symptomatic (31.4%) or the reason for the diagnostic assessment is not reported (5.2%).
